Asking Americans About Racism

  • Amanda on the Street, Holiday Specials, Video

  • jimmulrony

This whole series is so interesting.

I'm struck with how wise the American “man on the street” is…although people who jumped through hoops to be on the Mall 1/20 may be a self-selected sample.

I think I know where “there” is Amanda, and it's way closer now than when I was your age. Like shifts in tectonic plates, actually.

  • David Faroz Precht

It has evolved into prejudice in much of the U.S., and while most people not attached to the beliefs of their parents and generations before attempt to eliminate it all together. So, it's a process I can both see and feel.

in Henry County GA its still just under the surface in a big way

  • http://twitter.com/Level3Media Level3Media

still very prevalent here in many parts of Ohio, sadly.

  • Jon Duffey

Racism, sexism, age and religious bias… all are alive and doing well here in Tampa… where the County Commission just rejected benefits for domestic partners! Please join the cause Legalize Same-Sex Marriage.

  • Paolo Ranzanici

in Italy racism lives, but not to much (and I don't know how much is 'too much'…)

  • http://twitter.com/Spike72AFA Spike72AFA

#1. It's in the eye of the beholder. #2. Cui bono? #3. Is it better than it was in ___? We will never be perfect. Sadly.

  • http://twitter.com/HaDAk HaDAk

I'm not racist. I just hate stupid people.

  • http://twitter.com/Imarius Imarius

Alas, still alive and sliming around. Had a guy this wknd tell me he thinks whites should have more babies. :-(

  • http://twitter.com/digit527 digit527

racism: alive and well, see standup comedy, minutemen, poverty and imprisonment statistics for examples.

  • http://twitter.com/noebie noebie

mixed report from here – my kids are adamantly anti-racist, mix with anybody…so they get called names – hope + same ol deal

  • http://twitter.com/bwaynewillis bwaynewillis

Racism alive and kicking in SE Oklahoma.

  • http://twitter.com/Kallah Kallah

Racism is alive & well in Alabama. Only a few years ago my wife and I couldn't get legally married, we live in Georgia now

    • http://amandacongdon.com amandacongdon

you couldn't get married in Alabama because you are of different races??? I had no idea any US states had medieval laws like that! Can't be true– is it?

  • http://twitter.com/sokalo sokalo

    A question that begs retrospect

  • http://twitter.com/DrummerGuy DrummerGuy

I think you will find racism will vary from state to state in most cases.

  • http://twitter.com/noebie noebie

i honestly don't know if we're making progress or not – seems like at least the overtly racist stuff shocks most people here

  • http://twitter.com/sokalo sokalo

About nonexistamt, there is a present Elite-ism and social segregation of sorts, but not in the clashing sense, more subtle.

  • http://twitter.com/steveakimbo steveakimbo

In NC my white Presby pastor &choir performed at the African Amer. church just this week – well received. Relations good

  • http://twitter.com/Jack2point0 Jack2point0

sadly, we are a country of bigots. homophobia is legislated, and racism is prevalent (but not discussed openly).

  • http://twitter.com/spacepro spacepro

    high status where I live

  • http://twitter.com/biggaboss biggaboss

Hey Amanda… its real, trust me!

  • http://twitter.com/hamsterkitten hamsterkitten

Try having racist and homophobic in-laws! Can we ever hope that racism will become obsolete?

  • http://twitter.com/jcelegantjewels jcelegantjewels

Racism is still strong Georgia too. I'm orginally from Ohio where it wasn't this bad! :-( It's sad that people don't change.

  • http://twitter.com/fvongraf fvongraf

Racism and other forms of intolerance / groupings seem to be built in to the human neural process.

  • http://twitter.com/783nate 783nate

Columbus, OH – cosmopolitan (for midwest) city surrounded by conserv. country folk. Same as everywhere, it sucks, i hate it.

  • http://twitter.com/783nate 783nate

BTW, thx for exploring this. keep up the good work.

  • Rob Sidio

Chicago is an incredibly segregated city. Oak Park where I live appears to be liberal, but practices as subtle form of controlled racism. Very sad!”

  • Poppa J

Amanda, this is one of your best! It's great that you can deliver good, valuable , thoughtful stuff like this one day and outrageous goofy bits the next. Keep the surprises coming!

  • http://twitter.com/OGbigMoneyMIKE OGbigMoneyMIKE

I dont particularly care for Mexicans, but Im from L.A. and its a long story.

  • http://twitter.com/ericmayville ericmayville

Existent. The fact that we still have to ask about it is proof enough for me.

  • http://twitter.com/Davfar Davfar

Better than 40 years ago, but not as far along as we would have thought 40 years ago.

  • http://twitter.com/kevinchu kevinchu

Pretty mild here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Oakland has some issues, but for the most part, lots of harmony.

  • http://twitter.com/charleyw charleyw

well, living in Israel, I find that you can be Jewish AND anti-semitic. Go figure

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/IrishHermit IrishHermit

“There” is a time and place when we don't have to ask the question any more.

  • http://www.vergil66.com/blog vergil66

I realize that racism comes up more now with the election of Obama (or at least the topic becomes a talking point with folk), but it seems that the idea that one human doesn't like another human because of “X” or “Y” is very human.

  • http://twitter.com/AVNAwards AVNAwards

sadly, alive and sad, very sad.

  • http://twitter.com/Zer0mass Zer0mass

Not much in the way of racism in Seattle, unless you are white and walking through the ID to get some anime.

  • http://twitter.com/steadythere steadythere

in the bible belt of Oklahoma it's alive and well unfortunately but I think there is hope in the next generation

  • http://twitter.com/Jindai Jindai

I'm in Maine, and the racism I noticed since living here is between “coasters” and “flatlanders” bout it, so far

  • http://fearealized.com/ NaysWay

Yes. I agree with everyone who says asking the question is a sure sign. I'm black. I have a blog (like anyone else), and had someone call my child a “nigglet”.

Here's another example of a “yes” to your question: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/m.s.-bellows/anti…

I am English living in England and I come from a city that was at the very centre of the slave trade. I believe that Racism in Europe including the UK is on the rise again.

I am glad Obama has been elected not only because he is black but also because he is a Democrat. The combination can only be good for America and the rest of the world. Let's hope it's really getting there.
