I decided to take time this Memorial Day to observe the moment of remembrance and remind myself of what the holiday is really about (hint: not bbq)

  • Hmmm... as the unofficial start of summer, it's gonna be tough! We Americans rarely get long weekends off (comparatively)

Interesting issue. There are some holidays not taken too seriously when they are just assigned, announced, or optional in terms of time off (Valentines, Columbus, Veteran's, etc.). A holiday seems to be elevated to a more serious status when it becomes a national holiday that most people have off (MLK Jr. Day, Labor Day, 4th of July, etc.).

I find many people have more of an opportunity to reflect on a holiday's meaning when it's certain they have the day off. I think 4th of July is a good model - it's always on the exact day, but it is also a national holiday with a guaranteed day off despite it being on a Sat. or Sun.

Against. I think the day would totally be forgotten. People do need to be reminded about the true purpose of this day.
  • I was trying to puah the bike out of frame but now I see it adds a little something.
