The album is dying because most artists can't deliver 10-14 great tracks. Consumers have been overpaying until digital singles came along. Makes me appreciate the great artists that can put out a fantastic album. We need more pay as you please ventures.

Partly this is happening because most pop CDs of the 2000s are like many LPs of the pre-Sgt. Pepper/Pet Sounds era: The hit, the B-side, a few more good songs and lots of filler.

Some musicians can easily create over a dozen fab songs. I read that albums are making a comeback. I kept mine, have over 300. Sound is best on a turntable with a great cartridge.

Recorded music has always adapted to current technologies. 78s, 45s, EPs, LPs, cassette tapes, CDs, MP3s, etc. The album format is not set in stone as the standard. When the possibility arose to create long playing albums, musical artists rose to the challenge. Now, we are actually swinging back to the 1940s and 1950s ethos in terms of the focus on singles. Albums will still exist, but may not be predominant when calculating sales figures.

Kevin, you left out 8-track! how could you leave out 8-track?

A bit ironic that it's Radiohead who's come out publicly to make this statement. I'm a bit biased because I'm a big fan, but the bulk of their albums have been “records” that I listen to front-to-back.

I agree that many records have music that seem out of place or just plain filling, and the per song purchase model is good specially if your band is new and you want to start making revenue as soon as possible or if you are looking for specific music for a playlist or fun.
