Being hopeful that a cat will come back doesn't affect the likelihood that the cat will come back.

Optimism may help people to succeed at what they attempt, but it doesn't change the whole universe.

I agree with Eric: hoping a cat will come back does not affect the likelihood of that happening. Being positive does transform one's life, however, in my humble opinion.
