Loved that English teacher. “Unfriend” being the word of the year really reflects the incredible invasion of the language (and indeed culture) by technology. Was last year's verb “to Google”?? Great vid. ( Lavender is your color, Amanda….soft, beautiful, yet somewhat uncommon.)

This is a good one, Amanda! I actually “unfriended” someone recently and she busted me for it… There should be a word for that. Unless “stalker” covers it.

Doesn't work as well in real life, but it's a CINCH in the virtual world. Hate to use the “nuclear option” but it's nice to know it's there

I've been “unfriend-ed” but as of yet I still haven't, and haven't used the word in conversation but I'm sure the time will come

the word is not (and never will be) in my vocabulary! While I may end up rejected in such a way (whatever!), I won't be that way.

You don't “unfriend” people, by the current nomenclature, you “defriend” them. This is an example of stuffy old academics being out-of-touch with language on the street or internet.

hmmm. have to say I disagree Robb. I consider myself pretty up on this stuff and I've heard both expressions. However, I hear “unfriend” more often, and prefer it myself… so I'm happy with the New Oxford American Dictionary's choice to add it to the dictionary over “defriend”.

I'm all about “defriend” over “unfriend” myself. I guess it just depends on your circle of friends. That's how language tends to work, until one wins out as dominant. I particularly like the phrase “drunk defriending” – an amusing phenomenon to be sure….so many exes laid by the wayside….
